David Poulton

The underlying principles of design never differ in degree, only in scale.

Self-employed since 1981. My self-imposed apprenticeship since graduating from RMIT University Bachelor of Architecture in 1988 has been an ongoing acknowledgement towards the importance of making and design. In my practice, I have had a recurring theme of continually questioning the boundaries of design through innovation, contribution and cultural implication.

My practice has an emphasis on conceptual exploration, materiality, construction techniques and detailing. The strategy of using the full-scale prototype as a design tool is imperative in my practice. This situates the act of making at the centre of the design process and highlights the critical nature of incorporating the skills and expertise of my network of fabricators, suppliers and collaborators explicitly.

I have a wide range of design and hands-on construction experience; from residential to large-scale commercial projects; from retail and restaurant design; from furniture, object design and exhibition installations to urban planning.

Winner of numerous awards in residential, commercial and lighting, I actively wish to contribute to society, its interests and well being through my design.
