BroHaus
Typology: Family dwelling
Status: Completed 2000
Traditional Custodians: Wadawurrung
Location: Buninyong, Victoria
A new family house for young local family. A vacant site sloping down towards the north, an old church on the opposing hill and the “Gong” down the valley. The site had every element of a rural and distant setting yet the township of Buninyong is a ten minute walk, through the Botanical Gardens.
BroHaus hides behind the sweeping arms of the corrugated mass, the water tank; a gesture of the clients wish to “flood the valley”. From there it cascades down the slope never allowing a final view - always walking towards daylight.
The house received various awards; Best New Residence from the City of Ballarat (2004) and the honour of the Award of Excellence in lighting, Victorian Chapter 2004 IESANZ.
The corrugated wall is both a deflector and refactor of light and activity. The golden sunlight races across the ripples of the corrugated surface for a fleeting moment.
